Orange Spiced Chai Tea

Over the past couple of weeks I had seen Facebook updates from my brother and his wife talking about all of the yummies that my niece, Kierra, has been whipping up in their kitchen. The other morning she chatted with me and after wishing her a very "Happy 14th Birthday!" we made small talk about how school was going, gymnastics, and about food.
It's hard to believe that she has grown up this fast. I still recall the day my brother and his wife brought this sweet little bundle of joy to our home where I had to sit on the couch without moving so I could hold baby Kierra. Such a beautiful baby she was and now such a beautiful and very athletic young woman she has become.
I asked her if she recommended anything for me to make and Paula Deen's Orange Spiced Chai Tea it was. Being the foodie that I am it made me giddy to see my niece taking such a liking to being in the kitchen and sharing the love with others.

From word of mouth by Kierra and now myself I recommend making this Orange Spiced Chai Tea. It has a spicy bite from the cardamom and cinnamon and a sweetness from the honey with subtle hints of orange. Delicious! So yummy!
Makes 4 Servings

Stars of the Show:
  • 4 cups water
  • 6 cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 4 black tea bags
  • Peels from 1/2 orange
  • 1/2 orange, zested
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons honey
And Action:

In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, add the water, cloves, cinnamon sticks and cardamom. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat and cover. Allow to steep for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid, return it to the pan and reheat. Add the black tea bags, let them steep for a few minutes, and then add the orange peels and zest. Add the milk and stir in the honey. Pour into mugs and serve

Definitely yummmy! I was never much of a tea drinker but lately I've been enjoying a mug every evening when I get home from work. I bet you can really taste the orange and cloves and cinnamon, etc. And WOW to your niece!!! Athletic is right. Amazing!

Brenda - Chai tea is my favorite especially with soy milk added in. This was a nice variation to plain chai tea. Looking forward to making this again and again. Thank you for the compliment about my niece! She is an incredible kid!

Glad to hear you liked it. Kierra is growing into a young lady for sure. Happy to see her taking such an interest in the kitchen. And for that reason I am on the treadmill burning calories as I write this post... :)

Jared - Haha! That is hilarious. You better keep up with the treadmill "work"outs with all of those fun vacations lined up. I miss you guys so much!

Ah yes, the next Nadia Comaneci! Very talented indeed and with a very sophisticated palate. I thought kids don't like spices.
I love chai tea and this is a great idea adding the peel and zest ... extra "zing"!

Ping - I don't recall what age I was but as long as I can remember I've always loved spices. Plus she's a teenager. I remember thinking it was cool to hit up the Starbucks drive thru and order a chai tea with soy because that's what the older girls did on lunch break. My nieces have very sophisticated taste palates. They love sushi and seem very adventurous with their food choices.
